On Sam and Zak, and on the second weekly issue.

Dear Readers,

Today, at long last and for the holidays, Open Letters is publishing Cheryl Wagner’s long-lost interview with Sam and Zak, about the dangers and pleasures of smoking. Cheryl is a novelist and journalist in New Orleans; Sam and Zak are members of Mysophilia, a Florida death-metal band.

Because I like this interview so much, and because it is a holiday weekend, we’re going to take a brief respite from our regular publishing schedule and leave this up until Monday night. On Tuesday morning, for Independence Day, we will publish a new letter from Sarah Vowell, on patriotism and The Patriot.

On Sunday, the second issue of Open Letters, the weekly, will go out to our subscribers by email: a nice-looking, easy-to-read, easy-to-print twelve-page magazine that will appear as if by magic in their in-boxes. To read more about how the (free) weekly subscription works, and why we think you might prefer reading Open Letters that way, please take a look at this little explanation. To subscribe, check out this page, or simply send a blank email to weekly@openletters.net.

To subscribe (for free) to our daily reminder, send a blank email todaily@openletters.net.

And to write to the editors or the authors with technical suggestions, comments on letters, or just news about what’s happening where you are, write toeditor@openletters.net.

Yours truly,

Paul Tough
