On Joel’s letter, and on Larry Johnson’s four-point play.

Dear Readers,

Today’s letter is by Joel Lovell, an Open Letters editor who lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Open Letters is the third publication I’ve worked on with Joel; we also were editors together at Harper’s Magazine, and at Saturday Night. So he’s a little hard for me to sum up in a capsule bio. Fortunately, his letter speaks for itself.

Joel’s letter is the third installment in our week of open letters by Open Letters editors. An undisclosed number, between one and two (inclusive) will follow.

I received a few emails today from readers asking questions about our subscriptions, and how they work, which made me think that perhaps I should again direct readers again to this little essayabout the inherent paradox of reading and the web, and why we think you should subscribe to the free weekly PDF version of Open Letters; and this page, where our subscription options are spelled out in detail.

Yours truly,

Paul Tough
