On David’s letter, and on a photo in the dark.

Dear Readers,
Today’s letter is by David Brown, a writer and editor and some-time photographer who lives in Brooklyn, New York. David sent me this letter last week, just as our late-summer hiatus was drawing to a close, and for some reason, it fits, for me, with the end-of-summer vibe that we’re plying this week. It also connects, for me, with Cheryl’s letter, from yesterday: something about neighbors in trouble, I think, and what you can and can’t do about it.
David’s letter mentions a photograph that he took on the bridge; I asked him whether he could scan and send me a copy, and he did. Here it is:
The images in the photo are hard to make out, it’s true – David was, after all, shooting into a black sky – but if you look closely, you can see the subject of David’s letter, on the left, and a police officer on the right.
Yours truly,
