On Eilis’s conversation, and on top of a ferris wheel.

Dear Readers,

Today’s conversation is between Deirdre Dolan and her five-year-old niece, Eilis Dolan Klein. It marks the end of back-to-school week here at Open Letters.

Here is a picture of Eilis, taken by Deirdre at the top of the ferris wheel on the Santa Monica pier:

It was taken in mid-July, at which point Eilis’s first-day-of-school outfit was already hanging up, with her backpack, on the radiator in her bedroom back home.

As I mentioned yesterday, this is Deirdre Dolan’s third interview for Open Letters. She previously interviewed Sarah Jones, on the rules of popularity, and Invisibyl Ninja, on the rules of tech support; the latter interview was part of our special issue on life at work.

Tomorrow, the first weekly issue of Open Letters, volume two, goes out by email; it’s not too late to subscribe.

Next week we have letters tentatively scheduled on long-distance love, scooter accidents, and state capitals – though all of that is subject to change, of course, depending on the mail.

Yours truly,

Paul Tough
